Meet a Rare Book: Botanical Illustrations of Wildflowers
Join us in the Edward P. Connors Rare Books Reading Room to see some of the most distinctive items in our rare books collection up close. Tour the Helen Fowler Library, learn about the rare books collection, explore the history of the selected books, and discuss how we interpret primary sources.
Wildflowers present a unique challenge to the botanical illustrator in part because they are typically found in wild and remote terrain. In this hour-long program, you’ll meet a variety of adventurous scientists and illustrators who are responsible for creating some of the most beautiful books in our collection, including Jane Loudon, who wrote a popular science fiction novel about a mummy before turning her pen to plants, and Frederic and Edith Clements, a husband-and-wife team who established a high altitude ecology laboratory at Pike’s Peak.
