History for Homeschoolers at Plains Conservation Center: What Happened at Sand Creek?
In 1864, a violent event took place along Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado—one that continues to shape conversations about the state’s history today. But how should this event be understood? Was it a battle, a massacre, or something else?
In this class, students investigate primary sources from multiple perspectives to explore what happened at Sand Creek and why historians and communities interpret it differently. Through analysis of historical documents and discussion of modern memorials and commemorations, participants examine how the past is remembered and why it still matters today.
History for Homeschoolers is a series of classes geared towards students in grades 4th-9th.
