Boulder-based artist Robert Spellman takes inspiration from nature, using color and texture to create isolated, ethereal images of beetles and flowers that feel simultaneously scientific and mystic. Often painting over old canvases and incorporating old fabrics into his surface treatments, the formal qualities of the images give way to an archeology of layers and meaning.
