March 22, 2019 | Nick Snakenberg, Curator of Tropical Collections and Associate Director of Horticulture

Mass produced orchids have become more and more common at grocery and box stores across the country and are a great introduction to the orchid hobby. But if you’ve been looking for something a bit more exotic to add to your collection, have questions about orchid culture, or if you just want to see some amazing flowers, make your way to Denver Botanic Gardens on March 30 and 31 for the Denver Orchid Society’s annual Orchid Show and Sale.

Members of the society will be bringing plants from their personal collections to show to the public and vie for show ribbons and other awards. Expect a wide variety of flowers grown under a wide variety of conditions – from backyard hobby greenhouses to basement light stands.

In addition to the plants on exhibit, there will be tables filled with hundreds of plants being offered for sale to the public. Experts from the society will be on hand to guide you in your selections and to answer all your orchid questions.

Orchid growing question

I’m a newbie at growing orchids and was wondering if the DBG offers Q&A for people like me who are trying to be gardeners, in this case gardeners of orchids?

I would keep an eye out for

I would keep an eye out for class offerings from the Denver Botanic Gardens education department - either in the newsletter or on the DBG website. Not only on growing orchids but on a wide variety of gardening topics. You might also check out the website of the American Orchid Society for more orchid information.
