Garden of the Gods: A Springtime Journey to the Greek Islands

Greece in spring is a magical experience. It’s the time of the year when the entire country becomes a vast natural garden. Greece is home to a stunning number of plant species, comprising the richest flora in Europe. More than 6,000 species thrive in the country, of which about 10 percent are endemic and can be found nowhere else in the world. On this springtime journey we will witness the beautiful display of wildflowers that cover the land among ancient sites, old villages and notable islands. Tour leader is Dr. Sarada Krishnan, director of horticulture and center for global initiatives at the Gardens.

Fantastic Flowers in the Land of the Panda

Sichuan is best known, perhaps, as the homeland of the Giant Panda—and the lofty mountains that harbor the last of this species contain an astonishing array of choice wildflowers and alpine plants which will be in peak flower late June. This is a botanically focused foray, hiking at lofty altitudes (even over 15,000 feet) with longer stays at botanical hotspots (Balangshan, Huanglong). Here you can expect to see many species of Meconopsis, Corydalis, Primula, Androsace, Saussurea, Arisaema and orchids galore among the other treasures of the Himalaya. Botanical Wonders of Brazil’s Estrada Royal
October 5-13, 2020
This trip offers a rich cultural and botanical experience, exploring 17th - 19th century architecture, local cuisine, natural history, art, culture and landscapes. The journey will trace the Estrada Real, which opened in the 18th century to support gold mines. It was officially declared a tourist route in 1999 and is the most important tourist destination in Minas Gerais, encompassing historical cities, woodland parks, mountain, rivers, waterfall and lakes. Tour leader is Nick Snakenberg, curator of tropical collections and associate director of horticulture at the Gardens.
