Instructor: Veiko Kespersaks
Using a pointed, flexible nib, students will learn how to create a beautiful monoline script that forms the foundation of Spencerian and Copperplate hands. This workshop will begin with basic strokes and progress through mastering elegant minuscule and capital letterforms based on an original 18th century example book. Different pointed pens, penholders and papers, will be used to determine what works best for each pen. When the practice is completed, basic letterform transformations with the application of flourishes will be explored. After mastering the Spencerian hand, the workshop will study the Coppeplate letterforms and learn how to manage and control the thickness of a line while writing. Key pen strokes and the underlying principles of how flourishes are structured will be taught, along with how they can be used for different effects. Prerequisite: Knowledge of Italian hand. Fee: $325 member, $375 non-member.
