The potential and excitement of scratchboard will be discovered in this class, where contrasts in textures and values produce dramatic, luminous effects. As in no other medium, ink is correctible and can be used with a blade to combine black and white lines and dots, which are the basis of ink textures. Students will add the color as an accent to highlight areas of specific botanical interest or use it as a compositional element. Demonstrations and examples will show how to create a vast range of textures portraying subjects with detail and accuracy. Favorite subjects from nature will be selected to create a composition. Sketch, transfer and render in ink or pencil on white scratchboard by using techniques to convey form, shading, textures and spatial placement. Students will work toward completing at least one final illustration. Fee: $225 member, $280 non-member. Prerequisites: Pencil I, Pen and Ink II or Certificate in Botanical Illustration.
