Irene Wellington (1904-1984) is widely acknowledged as one of the most renowned and influential people in the development of 20th century calligraphy. She had an important role in the transformation of calligraphy from a medieval craft to a modern art form. You will first analyze Ms. Wellington³ calligraphy styles and her design elements based on Victorian illustrations. Learn then to combine calligraphic lettering with botanical illustration as you work with colored inks and gouache or watercolor. You will design and complete a composition using italic or copperplate calligraphic writing as a complement to your favorite botanical subject matter. Fee: $230 member, $285 non-member. Prerequisites: Botanical Illustration in Pencil I, Botanical Illustration in Pen and Ink I, Light on Form or Perfecting Perspective, Knowledge of some form of calligraphy (italic/foundational/Spencerian/copperplate) required.
