sustainability fair

Grass house Denver Botanic Gardens sustainability fairOn Sunday, April 20 (two days before Earth Day), the Green Team at Denver Botanic Gardens will host a Sustainability Fair. Highlights will include an exhibition hall featuring environmental organizations and sustainable businesses, educational activities, "urban homesteading" workshops (such as how to raise chickens in the city, organic beekeeping, and composting) and lectures on sustainability issues like plant conservation and green roofs. Please join us for this special event and learn what you can do to make our world a greener place!

What is Denver Botanic Gardens' Green Team?

The Gardens' Green Team is a cross-departmental group of staff members committed to implementing earth-friendly practices at the Gardens and educating community members on ways they can do the same. In essence, the Green Team is "greening" our internal operations and getting the word out about sustainability in new and creative ways.

In the last few months, the Green Team has jump-started a new recycling and composting program. This begins with a waste audit: literally going through our garbage to track what percentage is recyclable, how much is food waste, and how much is truly trash. We are investigating the sources of commonly purchased products and whether we can substitute recyclable or compostable choices. For instance, our café now features cutlery made of corn, which can be composted. We will implement a trial composting program at the café, so next time you are here, look for our special receptacles for your compostable waste.

Especially for kids: Get your hands dirty in the soil station!

It's a fact: The alligator drum and giant amadinda are musical instruments made from plants.

Botanical interest: Children are encouraged to interact with plants, including smelling fragrant chives (Allium schoenoprasum), touching lamb’s ear (Stachys byzantina) and soft artemisia (Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Silver Mound’).
