Arctostaphylos patula [Greene’s manzanita]Manzanitas are usually associated with California, where the bulk of the genus grows. But several species are found in Colorado, including this stalwart shrub which has thrived in Dryland Mesa and other gardens for nearly four decades. While many broadleaf evergreens have been damaged severely around town by this fierce winter, the Arctostaphylos patula (Greene’s manzanita) are unscathed. Their white and pink urnlike blossoms open in January some years, and last through spring.
